Compressors are widely used for narrowing the dynamic range and adding sustain. Often the compressor gets in the way as the performer is “felt to be squashed” when heavy emphasis is desired.
A unique solution is to allow the upper dynamic range to pass at a 1:1 ratio, and as the input level diminishes the signal is expanded.
